Ammunation Purchase
Starting July 1, 2019, ammunition buyers in California are subject to background checks similar to those for gun purchases. Detailed requirements can be found on the State of California Department of Justice website: https://oag.ca.gov/firearms
User Guide
- If you have a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) or a REAL ID Driver’s License, the background check process should be quick and easy, especially if you’ve previously purchased a gun through the state.
- Without a REAL ID or COE, you’ll need your birth certificate or passport and proof of residence (e.g., utility bill). Ensure the DMV has your current address.
Three types of Eligibility Checks:
1. Standard Ammunition Eligibility Check: Quick if your information matches an entry in the Automated Firearm System (AFS).
2. Basic Ammunition Eligibility Check: If you’re not in the AFS system, a check is performed after entering all information.
3. Certificate of Eligibility Check: Fast process if you have a COE, which requires a Live Scan and an annual fee.
Patience is advised when purchasing ammunition in the clubhouse, as it may take time to become familiar with the new process.
